See Brisbane For Under $5

Brisbane – the Best City in Australia

By Jennifer Macleay and Kathleen Aherne

I will show you how to see the fabulous city of Brisbane as viewed from the Brisbane River, for around $5. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland, Australia. Queensland is a northern state and Brisbane is situated in the south east of the state. We boast a sub-tropical warm climate that is beautiful one day and perfect the next.

brisbaneTake this self conducted tour using translink transportation. To start a fun filled day you will need to get from your accommodation to South Bank. You can travel via Translink buses or trains. If you are already in the city and can walk to South Bank, you will only be traveling on the CityCat ferry and would ask for an Off Peak ticket to Apollo Road. The cost is under $5 per adult. When coming from the suburbs of Brisbane, ask for an Off Peak ticket to the City. Depending where you are traveling from this may cost around $7. Take care of this purchased ticket as it is your travel pass for the whole day. Meaning that you can travel on a Translink bus, train or CityCat ferry for the whole day between 9.am and starting your return journey before 3.30pm. Or if you want to experience the night life and get night photos of the city, you may stay and take your return journey after 7pm. On weekends you can travel at any time, all day. All this on the original Off Peak ticket.

There are many things to do and see at South Bank apart from walking along the beautiful river front and appreciating the well kept gardens or drinking and eating at the many restaurants.

Down from the intersection of Ernest Street and Little Stanley Sts. is an Information centre where you can pick up a map and brochure of the area, use their Internet access or hire a wheelchair or stroller. Either before or after you take the ferry up the river, here are some of the many activities at South Bank. You could visit one of the many Art Galleries to view a collection of fine art or catch an exhibition. If you have children they may enjoy a free art workshop. Get some mental stimulation from the State Library. Find a unique gift at the Lifestyle Markets which are open on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Visit the Queensland or the Maritime Museum. If you need a time to sit down, see a movie at the Cinema Complex. Take advantage of Streets Beach for a swim or just to lay on the sand and relax or read a book.

Brisbane CityCat Ferry

brisbaneThis comfortable ferry river transport is a 45 minute trip each way. There are around 9 stops in the journey, you may get off and explore at any stop and then resume your journey or return to South Bank. For the best photo opportunities it is best to go through to the front of the vessel in the fresh open air as the inside windows are tinted and may be water splashed. Take in the views of tall city buildings with their varied architectural features and see the luxury residential properties with water crafts anchored at their private docks. See the cities bridges from a different perspective as you glide under them. The flowering trees and gardens along the shore add to the beauty.
